I totally get it, Siah. It sounds like you have ADHD. I do too, and I relate to what you're saying. This post was written 8 years ago, and my views have evolved since then. That said, some of this article still applies to people with ADHD, even if you need to keep using willpower to maintain a habit.

I think for most things there is the aspect of practice and muscle, but not everyone can form habits or memory. I actually *DO* use willpower every day to brush my teeth. I don't form habits or memories well. And I'll forget unless my teeth feel gross enough. Everything I do requires external reminders, whether it's discomfort, pain, or alarms, etc and is in response to something that is in that moment. So if I feel pain 2 days later, it might not motivate me. We're not all carbon copies for which the same template applies. Interesting story, but true for you is not true for all.

Baby steps! 😂😂😂 What about Bob? Was it the title of that movie? Dear God, so funny!! Sorry, that's aside... I'm trying to be serious here...

I am happy because I find treasures here on this site. I'm trying not to be overwhelmed by all the information I was given and also by my happiness!
It is a real danger to me!

Can I ask you something that is also a bit aside?
I would like to make a present for my new kung fu school, it would be a placard that says the same in Chinese that is written in my language on the flag of the school: "You don't have a stronger weapon than your willpower." I guess I could use the word 毅力 for "willpower" but I would also like to put a one-character word in the middle (a calligraphy😊) for willpower. And I'm struggling with finding that one character. Could it be 忍 or 恒 or 勁 or something else? I've read your article about Internal Strength and it made me wonder of the relationship between willpower and strength... I mean it's OK to put something else equally fitting in the middle... Any suggestion? 🙏

Thank you for everything, Sifu! 🙏
Have nice days!

This is a really helpful article, Sifu Anthony. Certainly this way of thinking was totally new to me when I first read about it on one of your blogs I think and, even better, it is working for my qigong practice. So that's one thing I have added. Now I am going to see if I can add another thing - or maybe take away something that I know is unhealthy, I need to decide. This has been a light-bulb moment. Would I be allowed to share this (in full and fully attributed to you) with some of my colleagues and maybe even students? Thank you for this wisdom.

Also, as an afterthought, if/when you make that dropdown menu, have categories as subheadings, and then list of articles that fit in that category. If you would like help in organizing this, just let me know. I know I'll learn a lot along the way. Thanks Sifu, Ishan das

Respectful greetings! Yes, small consistent willpower efforts -> nice habits.
And continue to build from there. Thank you.
Once again, I wish to make a suggestion. All through your articles (like this one) there are links to other articles. The links are enticing, so sometimes I end up jumping from article to article, until I forgot where I started.
My first suggestion is to place all these links at the bottom of the article in a list.
But my second suggestion is something I'd really like to see implemented. There are so many good articles on the site. My heartfelt request is that you add a dropdown menu to your top taskbar called "Articles". And then list all the article titles so that one can browse through them and select the ones that attract their interest. That would be such a nice feature.
Otherwise thank you, thank you, thank you! Ishan das
