A great article, had to read it again! When I studied Karate we had some great and skilled Black Belts, some were too busy to help lower belts. They were too busy refining their skills. On the other hand some of the less flashy BB’s were right there helping to make sure you got it as best you could.
I remember when one of our lady students was in Playboy, one of those Girls of the Big 10 or something like that. She definitely had all the attention from the ego-driven BB’s she could possibly want! haha!

Yes, a woman can absolutely be a Sifu. Historically, there have been many female Sifus.

Traditionally, a person became a Sifu when they left their teacher’s school, started teaching, and people started to call them “Sifu”.

Very well written, very honest and an excellent contribution to our learning. I study Tai Chi alone via books and Internet – and the best website about the subject: this one. The only coach available in my area is someone whose political views I do not respect, for being adept of oppressive regimes such as Cuba, China, Venezuela, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, etc., etc.. If Tai Chi is taught “heart to heart”, how can I be taught by a person who has no heart?

We might need the 10,000-hour rule to determine whether you are a master of Tai Chi and Qigong, but I can rely on my own eyes and experience to determine that you are a master teacher of these wonderful, ancient arts.
