Hello Anthony. I thought you might find this little knowledge tidbit interesting if you don't already know it, which you might. I had a good friend of mine teach me the Shaolin salute when he taught me Tai-Chi. He grew up in China with his family at a Shaolin temple, so he was authentic as far as I know. He taught me a 24 move combination Tai chi, I don't remember the name, you do almost the exact same set on one of your YouTube videos. Anyway when he taught me the Shaolin salute, he gave an interesting explanation. The flat left hand represents heaven, the fist right hand represents Earth, and the salute represents when heaven and Earth meet, as mentioned in the I-Ching. It was the only salute used in China that had any real spiritual significance. Any other bow or salute was just fancy interpretation and personal flair. The heaven and Earth go right along with the Yin/Yang, Tiger/Dragon dichotomies. I enjoyed the part about keeping your left hand at an odd angle, not completely flat. I think he may have shown me that part but I'm not sure, it was a long time ago, so that part was very interesting to me.

In reply to <a href="https://flowingzen.com/the-kung-fu-salute/#comment-71609">Mark Shveima</a>.

Hey Mark. Yin and yang are confusing because they are always relative, but in the case of the Dragon and Tiger, you'll usually see Tiger as Yang and Dragon as Yin. But you're right that these could be flipped if the reference point were flipped.

Anyway, shaking hands is different in different cultures. In NYC, where I'm from, it's common to shake hands even with good friends. But in Florida, the hug is more common.

Another issue with prayer palms is that it has religious connotations, both Eastern and Western. This rubs some people the wrong way.
