I chanted the Heart Sutra daily for almost two years... in old Korean. But there was a calligraphy on the wall with the Chinese version of it. I made a little research and I fell in love with it. As sitting meditation was too hard for me, copying the 心经 became my primary meditation practice.
I sent a copy to my old Chinese tai chi teacher and he replied that it was the Buddhist Heart Sutra (what I already knew), different from the Taoist Heart Sutra - which he was reciting. I didn't even know there was a Taoist Heart Sutra, too...
Have you ever looked into it? It's called 高上玉皇心印妙经。I would be glad to read your thoughts about it. About Taoism in general. I understand Buddhism and Taoism in China are almost inseparable, still, there is a Taoist tradition.
Thank you!

The Heart Sutra is very well known! I simply added my own ideas to what past masters have already done.

In reply to <a href="https://flowingzen.com/the-heart-sutra/#comment-224">Sifu Anthony</a>.

Thank you for this clear translation which crisply unpacks the many condensed Buddhist elements embedded in the Heart Sutra. I started understanding some of the elements by reading Red Pine, but your presentation seems more elegantly done (or maybe just because it is my second encounter). And I also find great meaning chanting it in Chinese.

Recently I have become frustrated with the free form translations of the poetry parts in Sutras. If there is a rhyme in the original, I would like to see the rhyme in translation. Can you recommend anyone who does that? With gratitude, ida

Yes, there's a translation in there, but it is different than mine. Sifu's translation is more traditional; mine breaks tradition by listing and explaining more of the details.

Hi Laurie. It's not necessary, no. Chanting is just another tool in the box. Your box is already full of excellent tools. If you want to learn chanting, that is fine, but in the end, what matters is whether or not you use the tools that you have in the box.

Sifu!

The translation is beautiful to me because it glorifies to me the emptiness of all my struggles to make enlightenment happen. So do I need to learn to chant? Would it be a good tool to make my mind less invasive and my tai chi smoother with better balance? Thank you for your time! Laurie
